Personally, I'm the sort of person who's a bit of a fan of the sort of wintry weather that will likely be taking the country in its clutches before too long.
I'm the kind of person who likes staying at home a lot – which is just one of the reasons why I spend so much time thinking about decorating! I want the space to be as lovely as possible, so that I can simply enjoy it whenever I like.
One thing none of us can fail to have noticed of late is that it's suddenly much darker in the evenings. I'm in my sixties and this change from the summer months still manages to surprise me almost every time!
Though I don't much mind it being cold out, I'm not the biggest fan of all the lovely evening light disappearing. I like to read a book by my window, so it's a shame not to have the view to enjoy or the extra illumination.
But the autumn change has got me thinking about how important curtains are at this time of year. After all, rather than drawing them shortly before we head to bed, many of us will be seeing much more of them, as we cover our windows earlier and earlier in the evenings.
Well, I've decided, I'm not going to let the dark get to me. I'm going to make the most of the winter's lack of light by incorporating the change into my decorating scheme – buying some new curtains.
I'm refreshing all my downstairs curtains. That way, when it does get dark, it will be a pleasure to close them.
Of course all the windows that have curtains in my home are in rooms decorated in slightly different styles, and have slightly different needs, but that's not problem. I would like there to be some continuity across all of the spaces, so I've chosen the same brand and type of curtain for all, but ordered different shades and sizes, to suit each space.
I think winter is a great time to use curtains to give a room a change of look.
