Pillows must be washed based on the fabric composition, as mentioned on the manufacturer label. Ensure the pillows are labeled as washable. Most polyester and cotton fiber based pillow covers are washable. Wash pillow covers separately after removing it from pillow.
Most orthopedic pillows, foam based and molded pillows are washable. Synthetic pillows that are filled with water and other material like buckwheat or gel cannot be washed. Also pillows filled with cotton or wool cant be laundered as they cannot regain their original form when soaked in water. These pillows have to aired or exposed to indirect sunlight.
Washable pillows can be machine washed on a gentle cycle, using a mild laundry detergent. Avoid using fabric softener. To dry the pillow, run the pillow in dryer on a low heat setting. To avoid clumping, you can use few colorfast tennis balls. Put airing cupboard for few days to ensure the pillow filling is dry before using it.
Alternately, pillows can also be pegged on washing line instead of running it in a dryer.
